Mates and puppies

Well the game is great but after I finally got a mate by guessing the tones(shear luck)I found out you cant have puppies. I had 3 slots open for them,I tried fighting small wolves and adding them to my pack.they randomly grew up.all that work getting a mate and I cant have puppies stinks.people complaining about not getting a mate its not worth it.
